Roberts
1 Davis Place Genealogies
For the Roberts narrative, I'm going to work backwards beginning with my mother, Anna M Roberts Woodcock. She was born on 21 September 1933, the seventh of 12 children, and the fifth daughter born to Ludie Mae Wascom and Wiley Edmond Roberts. The couple, Ludie born 5 November 1901, and Wiley born 18 November 1892, were married on 25 March 1922. They were married for 32 years until Wiley's death on 19 April 1954.

All my mother knew about her family's Roberts heritage was her grandfather's name, Ramsey Washington Roberts, and that of his wife, a Margaret or Mary McMillan. After tracking down and ordering a copy of their marriage bond, filed in December 1881, I verified that his bride's name was Mary PA McMillan, and traced the couple forward in the census records through 1920. Going backward to trace Ramsey's and Mary's ancestry proved a bit more difficult, and had it not been for the census taker enumerating several households twice in 1850, I never would have found Ramsey Roberts' heritage at all.

Ramsey Roberts is found on the 1850 Harrison County, Mississippi census with his mother Martha, and siblings Martha, William, George, and John, yet I could not find him anywhere in 1860, 1870, or 1880; neither could I find any of his brothers or his sisters. After exhausting all of my resources, I went back to the 1850 census to examine the households surrounding Martha Roberts' residence in hope of finding another Roberts family through which I might be able to establish a connection. I found on page 61 (Ancestry.com's numbering system) of the census, enumerated 9 November 1850, a Burrell Whittington and family living next door to Martha Roberts and children. Burrell Whittington happens to be my father's 3x great grandfather and as I had heard a rumor over the course of my research that my mother & father were distant cousins, his name and the fact that he lived next door to Ramsey's mother caused a bell to start ringing ever so softly.
