Thanks to the excellent research of Edward Breland, Alice Weber, and others, our branch of the Woodcock family is well documented as posted on Clarence Woodcock's Woodcock Family website, cwoodcock.com.

Our line definitively descends from William Woodcock b 1745 in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Some genealogies have him listed as the son of Joseph Woodcock, and there is compelling evidence to support this in the form of land records in North Carolina. William served in the American Revolution as a member of the Wilmington District Militia. Though the National Archives can find no military service records or pension application for him, I found five certificates in his name among the North Carolina Revolutionary Pay Vouchers, 1779-1782 "for service in the Militia."

After our independence was won, William and his family moved to South Carolina, where he served as constable of Barnwell County. They finally settled in Bulloch County, Georgia, where he won land in 2 lotteries based on his Revolutionary War service and served as the county sheriff in 1809. William died in Bulloch County Georgia in 1833.

William's son, Jacob, who served in the Creek War of 1836, moved to Mississippi sometime before 1841, settling in Hancock County. His children spread out into Harrison and Jackson counties where their descendants still live today.

Jacob's son, Charles N Woodcock, b 29 Sep 1829, enlisted from Harrison County, Mississippi to serve as a Private in Captain James B McRae's Company G (Live Oak Rifles), 3rd Regiment, Army of Mississippi, CSA, during the Civil War. He and his wife, Martha Jane Davis raised nine children before his death on 28 October 1917. He is buried in Antioch Baptist Cemetery in Long Beach, Mississippi.
